Library Support for Online Teaching during COVID-19

Library Services during the COVID-19 virus outbreak

Update: Monday 29th June 2020 - phased re-opening

Since closing the building on the 24th March, the Library teams have continued to provide online access to resources, services and library academic support. We do however understand how important the Library building is to our students and staff, and we would like to share with you all the stages in which we plan to re-open.

Summary

Reminder: Until we are open please keep hold of your books until you are asked to return them: you will not incur a fine as a result. If you absolutely cannot hold on to them you may return them to the Minerva Building Post Room between 09:00 and 17:00 Monday to Friday.

We need to introduce a phased return in order to protect the wellbeing of our staff and students. We are working with our colleagues from both the Estates and Health and Safety departments: this involves carrying out risk assessments and implementing the measures needed to ensure that we comply with social distancing rules. Once this stage is complete a small group of library staff will return to the building in order to prepare for Phase 1 of re-opening.

What changes are we making to keep you safe?

The safety of staff and students is our primary concern, and we have given careful consideration to all aspects of using the library in the new climate.

  • Our cleaning processes have been enhanced in order to maintain a clean and safe environment for all our users.
  • Appropriate anti-bacterial wipes will be available for students wishing to clean shared computer workstations prior to use.
  • All areas will be carefully marked out to ensure that we all comply with social distancing guidelines.
  • There will be clear screens at the Enquiries and Reception desk.
  • We are operating a one-way system, which will be clearly signposted.
  • The number of occupants allowed in the building at any one time will be restricted.

Once we are sure the Library is suitably prepared, we will begin a phased return.

Phase 1 - Focus: Collection and Return of Books Only

We expect Phase 1 to begin on Monday 20th July. We plan to operate limited opening hours between 11:00 and 14:00 on weekdays only. Reservations will be possible from Monday 20th July but at this stage it will not be possible to reserve books out on loan.

Please note: at this stage access will be limited to the Freezone area only, in the entrance of the Library.

  • We are introducing a new Click and Collect service. This will enable University of Lincoln staff and students to request a print copy of a book that is currently available on the shelves. Once the reservation has been placed, staff will collect the item/s and add them to your library account. Please allow at least 48 hours for us to process these requests and place them in the Freezone ready for collection during opening hours. If you are not able to collect your books you may be able to request a postal loan, please email library@lincoln.ac.uk to investigate. Please note: at this stage it will not be possible to reserve books that are currently out on loan.
  • There will be a book drop off area in the Freezone, so that you can return your library books.

Other library support available during Phase 1
  • Our live chat service will operate between 11:00 and 14:00. Telephone enquiries can also be made during these hours by calling the Library on 01522 886222.

  • We have an extensive range of e-resources and still encourage staff and students to utilize them where possible. For guidance using online resources please contact your subject librarian.

  • We will continue to process inter-library loans, with some exceptions. We can only provide electronic (SED) copies of book chapters, journal articles and conference papers. We cannot supply book or journal issue loans.
  • We will continue to offer support if you have an issue with accessing an e-resource, please contact our team for more assistance.

Phase 2 - Focus: Essential Library Visits Only

We expect phase 2 to begin on Monday 3rd August. We will maintain reduced opening hours between 11:00 and 16:00 on weekdays only.

At this stage we still encourage staff and students to continue to utilize all online resources and support where possible, in order to minimize the number of people on campus. During this phase students and staff to visit the library in order to use our click and collect service, drop books off, browse the shelves, and use the study spaces, PCs and printing facilities.

Our live chat service will operate between 11:00 and 16:00 and telephone enquiries can be made during these hours by calling 01522 886222. Other services will continue as in phase 1.

Phase 3

We expect phase 3 to begin on Tuesday 1st September. Opening hours will be extended on Monday to Friday from 09:00 to 17:00 and on weekends from 10:00 to 17:00. During this phase our focus is still on online support, with Academic Subject Librarians, the MASH team, and the Writing Development teams offering online appointments, workshops and seminars.

Phase 4

We expect phase 4 to begin on the 28th September, ready for the start of our Autumn term. At this stage we hope to be offering a 24/7 service and will update our opening times and this page with more information nearer the time.

Until Phase 1

Until Phase 1 and whilst the building remains closed please keep hold of books until you are asked to return them. All books are set to continuously renew, and during this period you will not incur any fines.

If you are unable to keep hold of your books, then you can return them to the post room which is on the ground floor of the Minerva building, between the hours of 09:00 and 17:00 Monday to Friday. To minimize the impact on our staff in the post room, please only use this option if it is absolutely necessary.
