Library Accessibility

A guide to the accessibility services available at the Library

Accessing the Libraries

University Library

The Main Library building has entrance barriers that require a Student Card to access. These barriers are wheelchair accessible. If you need assistance with navigating the barriers, library staff are available at the Help Desk, located on the left of the entrance barriers.

We have accessible, gender-neutral bathrooms on every floor.

The Main Library also has two internal lifts that provide access to all floors. The building features level thresholds throughout, making it easier to move between spaces.

Ross Lucas Medical Library

The Ross Medical Building also has two lifts that provide access to the first floor where the Library is located. Like the Main Library, it also has level thresholds throughout for smooth and accessible navigation.

In the event of an emergency, the lifts will not operate, however there are designated refuge areas on each floor. Each refuge area is equipped with emergency call points, evacuation chairs, and our staff are trained to assist to ensure a safe and smooth evacuation process. If you would like the refuge points showing to you, please ask at the library front desk.

Reservations

Our reservations service is available for library users who require assistance retrieving or finding items on the shelves. Simply reserve the book you require on the library website, and once it is ready to collect, we will email you. You will then have three days to collect your reservation from your selected library. A member of staff will be able to assist you in collecting your books from the reservation area if required, please just ask at the library front desk.

You can also follow our handy video guides on how to find, reserve and collect library items.

Adjustable Desks

Both libraries are equipped with standing desks and adjustable-height computer stations to support different working preferences and needs. Fixed height wheelchair-accessible computer stations are located on the ground floor of the Main Library.

We also have a variety of seating options to suit different comfort and mobility needs, including:

  • Stools
  • Benches
  • Armchairs
  • Office chairs
  • Booths
  • Sofa seating

Accessible Laptop Borrowing on Brayford Campus

Laptops are available to borrow from LapSafe cabinets at three locations across the Brayford Campus:

  1. University Library ground floor (48 in total)
  2. David Chiddick Building Global Lounge (48 in total)
  3. Minerva Building second floor Learning Lounge (24 in total)

If you require a laptop from a lower cabinet (positions 7–12) for easier access, follow these steps:

  1. Before swiping your Student ID card, click the wheelchair icon in the top-right corner of the LapSafe screen.
  2. The icon will turn green, indicating that accessibility mode is active.
  3. Follow the on-screen instructions to issue your laptop. The system will automatically select a laptop from the lower cabinets.

This feature ensures that students with mobility needs can access laptops comfortably and independently.

You will need your Student ID card to access this service.

Laptops can be borrowed for up to 3 hours at a time. If you need more time, simply return the laptop and borrow another—there’s no limit on how many times you can borrow.

If the laptop is late back you will be charged 25p per hour until it is returned. Make sure you receive an email receipt to confirm the laptop has been returned.
