Are all books available electronically?

No, not all books are available electronically; the publisher decides if a textbook will be made available electronically and whether that book can be accessed online or downloaded.

The University of Lincoln Library does, however, have a large collection of academic eBooks. You can search for eBooks using the main search box on the library homepage or by accessing one of the eBook databases listed in the menu.

Academic eBooks are designed to be read on the screen. Please be aware that the look of an eBook and what you can do with it will vary by database.

How do I search for and access e-books?

Go to the Library website and search for a book:

eBook on the library website

If you find a book that is available electronically it will have a Log in to ebook here or View Online link at the top left:

Access the eBook by:

  1. Clicking on the Log in to e-book or View Online link
  2. If you are not already logged on you will be asked to enter your student email address (studentIDnumber@students.lincoln.ac.uk) and password.

If you are struggling to read an eBook:

  • Please check that you have Adobe Reader installed on your machine.  You can download it for free here.
  • Try an alternative browser e.g. Google Chrome, FireFox or Internet Explorer.

If you have any questions about eBooks, please email your Subject Librarian.

eBook databases

In addition to the library website search, the following databases provide full-text electronic books:

Can I download an ebook?

Academic ebooks are designed to be read on the screen; however, some providers do give the option to download specific chapters or the entire book for a limited period of time:

  • BibliU - download the book to your mobile or tablet via BibliU's app (Google Play, App Store) or your desktop (https://bibliu.com/#/platform)
  • Ebook Central - ebooks downloads are not available but you will be able to download the PDF of a selection of chapters.
  • Ebsco eBooks - there will be a link to either the EPUBL or PDF full text.  Up to 100 pages of an eBook can be saved for printing or emailing.  Please note that the number of pages available may vary depending on individual publisher specified limits.
  • VLeBooks will allow you to download an ebook for either 1 or 3 days.  To be able to download the ebook you will need to have Adobe Digital Editions installed on your device.

BibliU ebooks can be downloaded to a device for the subscription period.  If you download a BibliU book and you find that it disappears, it could be that the subscription has expired.  Please email your Subject Librarian if you have any issues.
