Reading and downloading ebooks

Academic ebooks are designed to be read on the screen; however, some providers do give the option to download specific chapters or the entire book for a limited period of time:

  • Ebook Central - ebooks downloads are not available but you will be able to download the PDF of a selection of chapters.
  • Ebsco eBooks - there will be a link to either the EPUBL or PDF full text.  Up to 100 pages of an eBook can be saved for printing or emailing.  Please note that the number of pages available may vary depending on individual publisher specified limits.
  • VLeBooks will allow you to download an ebook for either 1 or 3 days.  To be able to download the ebook you will need to have Adobe Digital Editions installed on your device.

You can search for ebooks on the Library website.

FAQs

Yes, you can use the libraries at Lincoln and Holbeach. You will need to scan the barcode on the UniLincoln App to get in and out of the University Library and to borrow books.

Go to the library's distance learners page for more information about the postal service.

If you would like the library to send books to a different address you will need to update this information on the main student management system. You can do this by emailing wbdladmin@lincoln.ac.uk

Library books are initially issued for four weeks. Your book will automatically renew unless it is in high demand and has been reserved by another user. High demand items may be recalled so please keep an eye on your university email account as any recall or renew notification will be sent there.

You will be sent an email 2 days before the due date to state whether the item has been renewed. The book will not renew if:

  • the book has been reserved by another user
  • you owe £10 or more in fines and/or charges
  • it is an inter-library loan
  • the book has automatically renewed 99 times
Failure to return a reserved item by the due date will incur a 25p per day late return fine.

The SCONUL Access scheme offers students registered at the University of Lincoln access to other UK higher education libraries.

Most part-time, distance learning and placement students (Band B) will receive access, and potentially borrowing rights through the SCONUL Access scheme.

Please note that this is only available for UK based students.

Both Mount Pleasant Airfield Library in the Falkland Islands and the College Library at Cranwell provide access to some key texts. If you are struggling to get hold of textbooks it may be worth contacting your local station library (if you have one) as they may have a budget to purchase recommended textbooks.

You can apply online by:

  • Going to SCONUL Access
  • Selecting what kind of user you are: Distance Learner
  • Selecting where you are studying: Lincoln
  • Selecting the Library that you would like to access: use either the map or the list From the pop-up screen, click on the 'Apply for access' button
  • Completing the online application form.

You will be sent an email notification to say that your application is being processed and, when approved, you will receive an email confirmation. Please follow the instructions in the email confirmation.

Please note that this is only available for UK based students.

No, not all books are available electronically; the publisher decides if a textbook will be made available electronically and whether that book can be accessed online or downloaded. If there is a book on your reading list that is not available electronically it is because the academic responsible for that reading list thinks that it is important.

The Library encourages tutors to identify a chapter of a book that is only available in print as this can often be digitised under the Library's Copyright Licensing Agency (CLA) Licence.

If you have found a book that you would like to read, but it is only available in print, you can request to have a chapter digitised through the Scan and Send service. Click here for more information.

If the book is not available electronically it is unlikely that the library can get access. You could do a Google search to see if all or part of the book is open access. Alternatively, the library does offer a Scan and Send service so, if you would like access to one chapter or 10 % of the book (whichever is greater) you can request it via this service.
