Career Progression

We understand that interviewing for and beginning a new job can be nerve-wracking. Your personal tutor can offer support, but we also have resources, and careers advice you need to be successful in your career progression through University of Lincoln Careers & Employability

Careers advice step 1: Searching for a different job

Before you decide which area, you want to find a job role in, we recommend you research different roles. Every role has strengths and weaknesses, long term opportunities and each requires a different skill set. Please be aware that if you are on an apprenticeship programme that we would need to agree your transfer to a new employer and that employer would need to make initial contact ahead of you starting with them.

Careers advice step 2: Apply and think smart

Once you have decided to leave your current employer or seek promotion with the same employer, you now need to work on presenting yourself in the best possible way. The application form is very important, it will end up on the desk of an existing or new employer and they will decide if they want to interview based on what you put in your application. Therefore, once you’ve completed your application form, check it once and then check it again. Read your own application as if you were the employer. Would you invite yourself for interview?

  • Make your application form the best it can be
  • Check your grammar
  • Check your spelling

Careers advice step 3: Interview Preparation

You may have had experience attending interviews before, or it may be your first time. Either way, we always provide advice and guidance. Interview preparation is key, you may think you’ll be fine and choose to “wing it”, but employers will know and if you fail to prepare, you are preparing to fail.

If you are applying for an internal vacancy, your workplace mentor may be able to support with interview preparation and your Human Resources team will be on hand to guide you through the process.

Don’t forget that apprentices will need to complete a request to transfer form prior to accepting another job offer outside of their current employment. Your funding and ability to stay on programme could be affected if you have not been given approval to continue as an apprentice.
