Harvard referencing an introduction

Some referencing tips not included in the guide

As students you use a wide variety of sources. Here is some advice specifically for the Lincoln School of Film and Media.

Is it an online journal, pdf or webpage

Often material found online can be referenced correctly in a couple of different ways. You can become bogged down in differentiating the source whereas a journal found on a website can be referenced as a website or a electronic journal. Both ways of referencing this will include similar content in the reference. If you don't have all the elements you need to build the online journal reference (in particular volume and issue) then choosing a web reference will give exactly the same information. This will particularly be the web address which will aid a check for plagiarism.

Discussing a media product such as a film, television program, photograph or piece of music.

As you discuss a media product in your work you may feel that you have to reference it every time you talk about it. You should reference it correctly at the beginning and include the title of the media product in italics. If the media product is the subject of your discussion you don't need to until you discuss something included in that media product.  If in doubt check with your academic who will be able to advise.
