Searching for and accessing journal articles

You can access journal articles recommended by your tutor via your online reading list (search by module code or title or access it via the link in Canvas).  Click on the 'View Online' link.

If you would like to find journal articles for your assessments, follow the guidance below.

Search for journal articles using the library search box

Help with searching for journal articles:

  1. Type your keywords (e.g. leadership and management) into the search box
  2. Click on Search.

You can refine your results by using the options on the left of the results screen:

  1. Select Peer Reviewed
  2. Change the publication date
  3. Limit to Academic Journals

You can also add additional keywords to the search box but, be aware that you will lose the options that you selected.

When you have found an article that you are interested in:

  1. Click on the title of the article
  2. Read the abstract and, if you would like to read the full article, click on the PDF link (if available)
  3. If you are not already logged on you will need to enter your student email address (studentIDnumber@students.lincoln.ac.uk) and Canvas password.
  4. If there is no full text link, click on Find Full Text to see which database the full text is available from

If you have a reference to a journal article, you can see whether the library has access to it by searching for the journal here (search for the name of the journal not the article title).  You can also browse and search for journals in the library collection here.

FAQs

If you are trying to access the full text of a journal article, check to see if the library has access by searching for the journal title (not the article title) on the library's Publication Finder.

If the article is not available in full-text in the library you can request a photocopy of the article via the University's Inter-Library Loan (ILL) service. The library will try to get a copy for you from another library; however, this is not guaranteed as it depends on whether the article is available and whether that institution is happy to supply.

Everything you need to complete your module should be available online; however if, when doing independent research, you find an article that is not available electronically, but is available in print you can request it using the library's Scan and Send* service.

*You may only request one article from a single journal issue. These limits are governed by copyright legislation, and you will be required to complete a copyright declaration when making your request.

If you find a journal article that you would like to read, as long as the University subscribes to the journal, you will be able to access it by entering your student email address and your (Canvas) password.

Your student email address is your student ID followed by @students.lincoln.ac.uk

If you continue to have access issues email Helen Williams your Subject Librarian with details of what it is you are trying to access.

You can save searches, article and books when you use the 'advanced search' on the library website.

You will need to create an account the first time you use it, click on the video below to find out how to create an EBSCOhost account.

What URL to use

You should look for a permanent link when you find information on the library website. Copying the URL in the address bar may result in the link breaking as it contains information about the search session rather than a direct link to the source.

Look for the 'Permalink' option to the right of the screen (see screenshot below). When you click on the permalink option you will see a permanent link appear above the title of the article. Use this to ensure that you can get back to the relevant page.
