Support for Academic Staff

Setting up new courses

Before the Portfolio Oversight Group (POG) process, you will need to discuss any resource implications for the new course with your Academic Subject Librarian.

We will then work with you to identify what funding is required for resources to support the course, including setting up and ongoing costs for the first 5 years. Resources you may wish to consider include:

  • Books for teaching, both essential and recommended reading (generally a one-off purchase)
  • Additional journal titles (annual subscription- year on year commitment)
  • Specialist databases (annual subscription - year on year commitment)

In addition you will need to include an annual increment of 5% each year to cover inflation costs. Your Academic Subject Librarian will confirm when the costs are approved to be included in the POG documentation.

Suggested wording for your POG bid

Your Academic Subject Librarian will send through the wording and a table of costs for you to include in the Library section of the POG Business Case.

Talis reading lists for validation/ revalidation

A Talis Aspire reading list is required for each module as part of the validation and revalidation process, to help map out the academic content of a programme and reflect the intended curriculum. The reading lists will then be used to inform the book purchasing for your course.

You will need to create your lists prior to validation/revalidation, and also allow sufficient time for us to review and publish the lists ready for the validation meeting. Training on using the reading list software to create your lists is available, and we may also be able to help you with creating the lists.
