Online reading lists (Talis Aspire) for Academic Staff

What is Talis Engage?

Talis Engage is a brand new feature built into the Talis Aspire Online reading lists, designed to facilitate student interaction and discussion with their core readings.

With this feature students can add comments and discuss uploaded resources directly within the reading list. It is then possible to embed the resources in Blackboard via the existing reading list integration so weekly readings are presented alongside other course materials.

1. Add a resource to your module reading list.

2. Select "Upload file" from the menu next to the resource.

3. In the pop-up that appears upload your file and select whether to turn on class comments. You can also choose to stop users downloading the document.

If the upload is successful you will receive a notification confirming this and the file will then be available to students via the View Online button next to the resource.

If you are uploading a resource which has an ISBN or DOI, your request will go through standard copyright checks and there may be a delay before the file is available to students. If your resource does not pass copyright checks please contact us.

FAQs

You will need to add any resources you want to use to your module reading list first. Once you've done that you can then upload book chapters, journal articles, conference papers, audio clips, documents, reports and presentations to Engage.

All content uploaded must adhere to copyright regulations and all book chapters and articles will be checked for copyright compliance.

Engage supports documents, audio files, images and text documents, including PDFs. A full range of the file types you can upload is available in this support article.

Whether you choose to upload via Engage, or request a digitisation depends on what you want your students to do with the resource.

Engage

We'd recommend this if you want students to comment and discuss the resource, or if you have any audio, image or powerpoint files.

Digitisations

We'd recommend this option if you are happy for students to just access and read the resource.

Existing digitisations will not have the Engage functionality so students will not be able to comment on and discuss these. If you'd like to discuss moving your digitisations to Engage please contact us.
